2008 Devotionals

Members of our congregation were asked to write some devotionals to make up a collection and to be read during services in November. Below is a sample of one of those deveotionals. View entire devotional booklet as a PDF.

Thank You for My Life

Dear God, thank you for my life on this earth, however challenging or not.

Thank you for giving me free will to love and be loved, to make my own decisions, to learn from my mistakes, to laugh when I am happy, to cry when I am sad.

Thank you for my family, my pets, and for every other living creature I meet along my journey.

Thank you for giving me the strength to overcome adversity, to do what’s right for the benefit of others, and to rise above negativity.

Thank you for giving me hope for an end to world suffering, pain and war for a better world filled with light and everlasting love.

Why Are You Here?

When you come to our church you may think you are here because you saw an ad, received a postcard or said yes to an invitation by a friend or relative to attend this worship service. But I believe you are here because the Holy Spirit called you here for comfort, strength or to receive the knowledge of God’s love for you. It is not an accident you are here. In some way God is speaking to your heart and mind about His love for you.

God wants a relationship with you that begins now and lasts through all eternity. The way we discover and most importantly experience our relationship with God is through our relationship with other Christians. Christians are not perfect but they know the One Person who will make them perfect and that is God as revealed in Jesus Christ.

We are introduced to a relationship with God through other people but we enter into that relationship through Jesus Christ. We enter this relationship when we recognize we are not perfect (sinners in traditional language) and we need someone who can make us perfect, save us and grant us abundant life here on earth and in the world to come.

We come into this relationship when we recognize Jesus is our Lord (Master, Leader, God) and believe that God raised him from the dead. We can do this in the privacy of our minds but the reality of relationship with God through Jesus Christ is lived out in his Body, the Church.

Christianity is as much about belonging as believing. When we believe we become part of Christ’s body (the Church) and then the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts for the good of the church. All gifts like all people are important and necessary for the growth and mission of the Church.

If this day you decide you want a relationship with God through Jesus Christ pray the following prayer and then seek spiritual guidance in how to live it out in a Christian fellowship or Church.

Pray, “Dear Jesus Christ, I see my deep need for you. I see my imperfections or sins that block my relationship with you and God. I pray you forgive me and trust you will grant me abundant life here on earth and eternal life in the world to come. I choose you as you have chosen me to be here today. I believe in you as my Lord and my God. Amen.”

If you have prayed this prayer the exciting part now begins for as much as God has called you here today he calls you into Christ’s Church and mission. The mission He has given us is, “As People Caring for People, Christ calls to teach, baptize and make disciples in a spirit of compassion.” If Christ has so called you – please join us in our mission here.
