Thank You for My Life

Dear God, thank you for my life on this earth, however challenging or not.

Thank you for giving me free will to love and be loved, to make my own decisions, to learn from my mistakes, to laugh when I am happy, to cry when I am sad.

Thank you for my family, my pets, and for every other living creature I meet along my journey.

Thank you for giving me the strength to overcome adversity, to do what’s right for the benefit of others, and to rise above negativity.

Thank you for giving me hope for an end to world suffering, pain and war for a better world filled with light and everlasting love.

Rev. Fred Baum Senior Pastor
Rev Fred Baum

Pastor Fred was born in New Mexico and was raised in the forests of Arizona and New Mexico. His dad was a Forest Ranger. His family finally settled in Tucson where he graduated from the University of Arizona. His major was anthropology because he was studying to be a Biblical archaeologist. He received his seminary education at Perkins School of Theology on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. His major area of study was evangelism. While there, he met and married his lovely Texas bride, Deede, who received her degree in Music Therapy from SMU.

After college, Deede directed church children's and youth choirs for 20 years. During this time, she also received her Master's Degree. She now teaches general music in the Flowing Wells School District. Fred and Deede have two lovely daughters, Amy and Sarah and a son Kevin.

Amy is in her last semester of college at the University of Arizona. Sarah is teaching Junior High English at Kino Junior High in Mesa, Arizona. Kevin is a senior at Sahuaro Highschool.

Pastor Fred spent 24 years of his pastoral ministry as an associate pastor, working with children and youth both in Arizona and Texas. Pastor Fred strongly supports children and youth ministries within the church, for they are the church of today and tomorrow.

Director of Youth Ministries
Tonya Jones

Tonya Jones came to the Desert South West conference from the New England Conference in July, 2006. She is a certified candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church. Tonya completed her Masters of Divinity with a focus in youth ministry from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton, MA (near Boston) May 2007. She has been actively involved in youth ministry since she came to faith through college campus group in 1990. She has enjoyed ministering to young people through the UMYF, Asbury Grove (Methodist camp meeting ground) summer camp as staff for 3 years, and both Young Life & Wyld Life. Her husband, Scott is the children & youth choir director and praise team director. She has two young boys: Matthew & Mark. Prior to accepting the call into ministry, she worked as an Engineer in the Plastics field for 5 years, earning her 2 engineering degrees at Penn State in Erie, PA.. Tonya loves teenagers and enjoys walking with them during these trying and challenging years.

Tonya’s Personal motto is:  Faith is not fully realized for a young person until it is real in the hallways of their school.

Tonya recognizes the tenancy of young people to compartmentalize their lives. She sees a scary trend of young people leaving their faith behind when they enter into high school and college. She is passionate about finding ways to sustain their faith and provide events that challenge young people to embrace a faith that is a life changing, life sustaining faith that will be carried into every part of their lives.
